Musician Portrait Photography in Miami | New World Symphony CTMP

One of the things I enjoy most about portrait photography is finding ways to capture someone's personality while creating images that feel natural and professional.
In September 2026, I had the opportunity to photograph a group of young musicians participating in the College Track Mentorship Program (CTMP) at the New World Symphony in Miami Beach.
The session took place at the New World Center, a building I've come to know well through my work with the orchestra. Its modern architecture, beautiful natural light, and clean backgrounds provided a wonderful setting for these portraits.
Finding the Right Setting for Each Musician
Before the session, I scouted different areas of the New World Center and selected three or four locations that would work well for portraits.
I wanted to give the students a variety of photographs, so I took each of them to most, if not all, of those locations. Some offered interesting architectural elements, while others provided simple, neutral backgrounds that kept the focus entirely on the musician.
But even though we were working with the same spaces, I didn't want the portraits to look identical.

One of my favorite challenges was finding something a little different for each student. I experimented with poses, framing, and angles, always looking for compositions that suited both the person and their instrument.
The goal was to create a cohesive collection of professional portraits while making sure each musician had something distinctive.
Helping Students Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera

Being an accomplished young musician doesn't necessarily mean being comfortable posing for photographs!
The students were fairly relaxed, although most needed some direction. As I usually do during portrait sessions, I guided them through different poses, made suggestions, and joked around to help everyone feel more at ease.
I find that a relaxed atmosphere makes a real difference. When people stop worrying so much about how they're standing or what to do with their hands, their expressions become more natural.
Throughout the session, I photographed a mix of full-length portraits, medium shots, and closer headshots. Their instruments were an important part of the images, sometimes becoming prominent elements in the composition and other times simply complementing the portrait.
By the end, each student had a selection of photographs with different expressions, poses, and backgrounds.
Professional Portraits for Musicians in Miami
Professional photographs can serve musicians throughout their careers, from student performances and auditions to concert programs, artist biographies, and websites.
I especially enjoy photographing musicians because it brings together two things I love: music and photography. And after years of working with the New World Symphony, it's always a pleasure to photograph musicians in a setting that's become so familiar to me.
Whether you're a student preparing for your first professional opportunities or an established musician updating your portfolio, a portrait session can be tailored to reflect your personality and artistic identity.
