Family Photos at Dania Beach: Golden Hour by the Lagoon and Ocean

When choosing a location for family photos, I always look for places that offer a little variety. Dania Beach, just south of Fort Lauderdale, is one of those locations. Beyond the shoreline, there are beautiful pockets of coastal vegetation, sandy paths, and a small lagoon that make it possible to create several different looks in a single session.

For this family of four, we chose a spot north of Dania Beach Pier, an area I'd photographed before and knew would work beautifully for their portraits. It was also a convenient location for all of us, without requiring a long drive to Miami Beach.

After a week of rain, we couldn't have asked for better weather. We had beautiful golden light to begin with and soft pink skies by the time we reached the ocean.

Why I Like Dania Beach for Family Photography

What makes this particular stretch of Dania Beach appealing is the combination of greenery and open coastline. We can begin among the trees, where the late-afternoon sunlight filters through the branches, and gradually make our way toward the water as the light changes.

This variety is especially nice for families who want more than traditional beach portraits. Within a relatively small area, we can photograph against lush green backgrounds, beside the lagoon, among the dune grasses, and finally along the shoreline.

For this session, I wanted to take advantage of those different settings while creating a combination of classic family portraits and more spontaneous images.

Making Family Photos Feel Natural

We began by the lagoon, where I'd brought a blanket and a picnic basket filled with apples. I like incorporating simple elements like these because they give the photographs a little more intention while also providing a comfortable place for everyone to sit together.

I always enjoy incorporating a little play into family sessions. For this one, I brought a colorful pinwheel and a large seashell, and we also had some fun swinging their daughter in a blanket. These simple activities create opportunities for spontaneous interactions and give the photographs a more relaxed, natural feel.

Of course, we also made time for traditional portraits, individual photographs of the children, and a few of Mom and Dad together. I love having that balance between carefully composed images and the little moments that unfold along the way.

From Golden Sunlight to Pink Evening Skies

One of the most important things about planning an outdoor photo session is timing, especially when we're working close to sunset.

This family arrived on time, and it made a tremendous difference. We were able to begin while the sun was still filtering through the trees near the lagoon, giving us that warm, golden light that's so beautiful for portraits.

As the sun went down, we moved toward the shoreline. The light became softer, the sky took on delicate shades of pink, and the ocean provided a completely different backdrop from where we'd started.

It's exactly why I recommend arriving at the scheduled time for an outdoor session. Those last moments of daylight are precious, and having enough time allows us to enjoy the experience rather than rush through it.

We finished with the family walking along the water, the children exploring the beach, and everyone taking in the ocean together.

Planning Your Own Family Photos at Dania Beach

If you're considering Dania Beach for family portraits, I recommend allowing enough time to enjoy both the greenery and the shoreline. The different settings are part of what makes this location so versatile.

Comfortable clothing that allows you to sit, walk, and play is also helpful, especially with children. For this family, soft whites, creams, and neutral tones worked beautifully with both the green landscape and the pastel colors of the evening sky.

And if your children aren't particularly enthusiastic about posing, that's perfectly fine. Some of the most meaningful family photographs happen when everyone is simply enjoying an activity together.

I photograph families throughout Miami-Dade and surrounding South Florida communities, and I'm always happy to help choose a location that fits the look and feel you're hoping for.
